Its possibly the most exclusive beer in the world

Finally, a beer review which is not delayed but rather is posted the following day.

  • St. Bernardus Abt – Nothing special. 5
The whole range of St. Bernardus is rather disappointing. And its not just me who thinks so – its just not very good.
  • Westvleteren 12 – probably the most expensive beer I’ve ever had. Exclusivity has a price. As Father Abbott said on the opening of the new brewery, “We are not brewers. We are monks. We brew beer to be able to afford being monks”. Respect. So the production is low and the beers are not sold commercially by the abbey. Actually, any pub or store that sells Westvletteren is in breach of the purchasing contract – you’re supposed to buy it for your own consumption only and only at the abbey. The sale is limited to one crate per buyer, and due to all these complications I’ve spent 10 Euro on a single bottle of Westvletteren, making it the most expensive beer I’ve ever had. Having said that let me conclude by saying – totally worth it. Just like the Westvletteren Blond, the 12 is a beer that is balanced to perfection. 9
